The Round Trip

Relego takes the passages you underline while reading and sends them back to you. Kindle recaps arrive on the device; Kobo recaps arrive in your inbox. No account, no subscription, nothing leaving your own hardware.

This is the whole system: three stages a highlight passes through, in the order you will set them up. Kindle readers finish on their device; Kobo readers finish in the inbox they choose. Start at the top if Relego is new to you, or jump to the stage you are stuck on.

1. 1Import highlightsYour Kindle or Kobo writes highlights to a file. Start the server, then upload that file in the web interface.
2. 2DeliverOn a schedule you set, the server sends an EPUB to a Kindle or an HTML recap to a Kobo reader’s inbox.
3. 3RevisitUse the web interface to send your first recap now, then read it on your Kindle or in your Kobo inbox.
4. Back to Import highlights, the next passage you underline joins the same circuit.

Before you start

You need three things:

• A Kindle or Kobo you can plug into your computer over USB. No device handy? Sample files ship with the project, see Import highlights.
• A machine to run Docker: a laptop, a NAS, a home server. Relego is distributed as a container.
• An SMTP relay to send mail through. Free tiers are plenty. There is a demo relay you can use to test without signing up for anything, see Deliver.

Everything else is covered as you go.

Your first recap

The web interface is the shortest route from a highlight file to a recap:

1. Start the server, then open the web interface.
2. In Import, upload your reader’s highlight file.
3. In Settings, add your Kindle address or the inbox you use with Kobo, then save.
4. Open Recaps and select Send recap now.

That is the full first-run path. The command line is available when you want to automate imports or prefer working in a terminal.
